Victim Syndrome
We often listen to the problems of others or their difficult life experiences. We are often introduced to victims of war and/or violence. However, we are too rarely aware that we do not actually know the person well enough and have not witnessed events when these people were victims of war or violence. We simply do not know whether this person is an actual victim of war and/or violence or has simply made up horrible stories.
I am very often accused of being heartless. However, I often defend myself that many facts are actually verifiable.
Starvation corresponds to checking with a scale and measuring height. We are all probably familiar with the story of ideal weight in relation to our height. And of course, given this definition of ideal weight, malnutrition or overweight also correspond. Even if a person claims that water is accumulating in their body and because of this they look fatter and weigh more, we can measure this with ordinary magnetic scales.
Sever injuries to the skin and other tissue caused by beatings or shootings or cutting usually leave scars. Even skeletal injuries that occurred in the past can still be identified as bone or skin healing. The same applies to sexual violence or even rape. Rape also leaves traces.
In short, we do not deal with determining whether someone is a victim of violence or not, simply send them to a doctor. There are real victims and imaginary victims. In addition to doctors, we also have a number of institutions that professionally provide all psychosocial assistance. We also have Social Work Centers. And we also have the police in the country, which are supposed to respond to calls for help and protect victims from attackers.
When we follow these simple instructions and refer so-called victims there, where they are supposed to professionally assess whether they are victims or not, we also avoid the situation of being exploited by imaginary victims or people who have victim syndrome. We must also be aware that unless we are an official, we do not have the ability to verify facts, circumstances or data. Only officials with special authorizations have this right.
