Balkan paradise for illegal migration

Opinions are always divided when Slovenian politicians say that we are the country with the highest tolerance for illegal migration, even though we are not the first Schengen border crossing. The promised European less tolerant policy guideline and the guideline for a paradise for illegal migration cannot be reconciled. Illegal migration to the European Union (EU) via the Balkan route is increasing. According to Frontex data, the number of illegal entries into the EU is decreasing, but Slovenia's illegal migration situation is an exception, and so is the Balkan route to the EU.

Forgotten rules for "hardworking" registered citizens and the equalization with migration

Only a Slovenian citizen within the territory of Slovenia must have a valid document, otherwise the police can fine you 200 euros. Crossing the state border without the appropriate documents costs you from 200 to 500 euros. Crossing the border outside border crossings costs you a minimum of 400 euros. Identity fraud by forging personal documents can cost you up to 3 years in prison and a permanent entry in your criminal record. This is how our country treats its own citizens. It is true that you can at least stay in your country, but you probably have difficulty understanding your country's "tolerant and humanitarian" policy towards illegal migration. Most illegal migrants, after illegally entering the EU and Slovenia, subsequently apply for asylum.

Illegal migration to Slovenia in numbers

In the period from 1. 1. 2026 to 31. 5. 2026, the Border Police Sector of the Republic of Slovenia detected 12,089 illegal entries into Slovenia. Of this number, 11,060 expressed intentions to submit applications for international protection, most likely without any penalties for illegal entry into the territory of the Republic of Slovenia. This means that a small number of illegal migrants do not have the right and/or do not want to apply for international protection after illegally entering and crossing the EU Schengen border, which is a criminal offense for us.

Most of these illegal migrants are from third countries with which we do not share a state border, so that illegal crossing of the state border could be considered a "mistake" due to unclear state borders and state crossings. Most of these illegal migrants are from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Egypt, which are also known for the presence of militant extremist Muslim groups.

Last year, only 7,655 illegal migrants were detected in the same period, and we will again be left scratching our heads as to why this number has increased dramatically again despite the promised tougher measures against illegal migration, since these countries are not on this year's list of Muslim countries attacked by Iran.
