Success story: BRICS

Nowadays, the greatest measure of the economic success of a country and/or group of countries on a global scale is actually gross domestic product per capita (GDP). And one of the most successful economic or economic stories of such success is the international economic group BRICKS.

BRICS was originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India and China and was called BRIC before South Africa joined. Slowly after 2000, this economic grouping recorded exceptional economic successes until 2022. Their GDP in that year amounted to 26.6 trillion US dollars, which is 26.2% of global GDP. All of these countries are also members of the G20 and are said to be more successful than the G7, which consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States. This is precisely why there are increasingly loud predictions that there will be a new redistribution of economic power or economic superpowers on a global scale.

First, it is necessary to know the basic data about the countries that make up the current BRICS.

Brazil is the seventh most populous country in the world with over 213 million inhabitants. In 2025, they had a population growth of 0.38%. Most of their citizens live in urban areas and are populated with 26 inhabitants per square kilometer of their territory.

Russia is in ninth place in the world population ranking with its population of over 143 million. It has 9 inhabitants per square kilometer of its territory. In 2025, their population deficit was 0.57%.

India is in first place in the world population list with its almost 1472 million inhabitants. It has 472 inhabitants per square kilometer of its territory and their population increased by 0.89% in 2025.

China is in second place in the world with its population of over 1414 million inhabitants. Their population decreased by 0.23% in 2025. It has a population density of 151 people per square kilometer of its territory and most of them live (over 68%) in urban settlements.

South Africa has more than 65 million people and ranks 24th in the world in terms of population. It has a population density of 54 people per square kilometer of its territory. The annual population growth rate last year was 1.16% and the majority of the population (66.9%) lives in urban areas.

On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates were also supposed to join BRICS, but this accession did not affect the change of name and their successful economic story continued.

In 2025, the BRICS countries announced that they already achieved 40% of the world's gross domestic product.
