Behind the curtain of the image of success

The belief in the development of the northern hemisphere of planet Earth is dissipating even at the mere sight of capitals and tourist centers in the southern hemisphere. The Covid-19 epidemic has also fueled debates about the northern illusion of a good standard of living of the so-called northerners, as the European continent was in the highest place in terms of the number of infected people per million inhabitants and the number of deaths per million inhabitants. The Covid-19 epidemic is a good measure of success, as experts believe it will primarily affect the poor population, who also do not have access to clean drinking water and adequate nutrition.

The Covid-19 epidemic has disappeared, but the unresolved issue of the illusion of a good northern standard of living remains, especially on the European continent and thus also in the EU.

The Covid-19 epidemic has also caused an economic catastrophe due to measures to restrict movement and close down activities in the individual and business sectors, as well as expensive preventive measures to contain the Covid-19 epidemic. Now, the war in Ukraine on the outskirts of the EU and this year's conflict on the Asian continent are joining it, which is expected to cause an energy crisis due to the closed Strait of Hormuz, and in the south, on the other hand, there are problems with the Houthis in Yemen. Otherwise, the previously paid Egyptian Suez Canal to the Mediterranean could also be used to get out of this crisis, when payment for sea routes is required, but this is not yet in the international calculation of sea routes. The Suez Canal is artificially created, which is the reason for paid passage services and the most likely reasons for digging the canal in the middle of Egypt were past disputes over sea trade routes, not just distance. On both sides of the Asian peninsula, there are supposedly natural exits to the open sea, which are being successfully closed with unilateral military force. All of this is said to contribute to rising inflation in the EU area, which currently stands at 3.2% annually. The largest contribution to the current inflation is expected to be made by energy inflation, which exceeds the 10% limit. Only a few countries were below the European limit of 3.2% annual inflation in May 2026, namely: Malta (2.1%), Germany (2.7%), France (2.8%) and Finland (3.0%), and Portugal with 3.1% annual inflation or a decline in living standards. The following countries achieved the highest annual inflation rate in May 2026: Bulgaria (6.3%), Lithuania (5.1%), Croatia (4.9%), Luxembourg (4.5%), Belgium (4.1%) and Slovakia and Estonia with 4.0% annual inflation. All other EU member states, including Slovenia, are expected to have an inflation limit below 4% and above 3.2% in May 2026. There is still not enough data to claim that the highest inflation rate is achieved by the peripheral EU countries, which are now also under the risk of war. However, the ongoing state of war on the EU borders is definitely causing higher energy consumption due to the increased level of war danger and the consequent need for additional protection of the EU borders.

In addition to energy, unprocessed food and services are also expected to exceed the 3.2% inflation rate. We are in the summer, when at least idyllically we do not need so much energy for heating, but we have fallen under heat waves or high temperatures, to which the normal response is cooling, which again requires energy. We used to say that "when the devil has young, he has many", so we can only hope that after an excessively hot summer, we will not be followed by an extremely cold winter, because energy prices are not calming down at all, let alone falling.

We can live in the illusion of a good northern standard of living and ignore the lamentations of those who live in the abyss of poverty they did not create and deal with the existential problems of others. However, it is good to observe the real situation before we see the torn pockets and blame them for our daily misery without a middle class with a handful of rich people and a multitude of poor people. And countries with employers can hardly raise minimum incomes at their own discretion.
